5 Styling Turnarounds for Dead Corners

As well as being a place where two sides or edges meet, by definition a corner is an area that’s secluded and feels remote. But it doesn’t have to be. In our homes, and living areas especially, corners need not be left bare and empty and, indeed, they shouldn’t be - these dead zones tend to suck the energy out of a room. Take some inspiration and create a refreshed and purposeful nook that adds colour, life and functionality to your living room.

1. Turn the corner with a modular sofa
L-shaped or modular-style sofas are useful in living areas, especially when there are awkward corners with which to contend. Most furniture stores selling modular sofas allow you to choose their orientation, and many sofas can be customized to fit your exact layout.Modular sofas are the preferred choice for many people because they can make the best use of a space. Just make sure the sectionals can fit through all your doors, and up any stairs as they tend to be quite blocky and bulky

2. Bring in some tall greenery
If you have windows forming a corner in your living room and you don’t want to block the light or limit the view, why not try a lush tall plant? The greenery helps create a softness without being a completely solid element that will appear too heavy. The plant will love the natural light and it is a great option for apartment dwellers or if you don’t have a backyard bring the outdoors in.

3. Tailor make the corner with custom joinery
An investment yes, but creating custom joinery in a corner space, or where the walls end and windows begin, allows for a fabulously functional solution in an otherwise tricky area. By using the vertical space you add extra storage, and you can decide to have open shelving, to hide your things away in cupboards, or have a combination of both.

Insert a floor lamp in the corner
Floor lamps are great because they provide that task or mood lighting you need in a living space and don’t take up much room. Plugged in to the corner, a floor lamp can reach over your sofa to help the living area feel more like its own zone; be more upstanding and shoot light upwards; or feature a semi-transparent shade that creates a soft glow and ambiance. The options are endless.A floor lamp can be tucked into the smallest of spaces. Just be wary of the shade height and position, so you don’t bang your head every time you get up or sit down.

5. Maximise space
Corners can end up as voids and dead zones, so make sure you are creating a functional space here, especially if you’re living in a small apartment. A recessed wall has been put to good use in this corner, with overhead open shelves and a petite chair. A great spot for guitar practice with your friends and family.

5 Clever Ways to Fit a Wardrobe into a Small Bedroom

Follow these tips on how to find extra storage space in and around your bedroom

In a compact bedroom, it’s essential to make the most of the space available, even when it seems challenging. From building cupboards up high to utilizing eaves down low, here are some smart ways to tuck in clothes storage.

1. Go vertical
Make the most of all available height and build cupboards all the way to the ceiling. If your ceiling is particularly high, you can use a rolling library ladder to reach the upper cupboards.Paint the wardrobes in the same colour as the walls and ceiling to prevent the room from feeling closed in. If your cabinets have dark interiors, be sure to install lighting, otherwise you might struggle to find things on dark winter mornings.

2. Look behind you
Where space is really at a premium, you could build out the wall behind your bed and fit cupboards into it.

3. Utilise the corridor
If you have a wide corridor or hallway, make use of the space by turning it into a walk-through wardrobe. In a space that’s quite open, or frequently used, it’s best to have doors fitted on the wardrobes to protect against dust and cooking smells. However, if the space is between your bedroom and en suite bathroom, you could have them open for easy access.

4. Maximise length
Long, narrow rooms are particularly difficult to furnish. Make the most of the length by installing a room-dividing piece of furniture.

5. Work around the window
A wall with a window is often an unusable space in terms of storage. This is particularly true with a low window, or one with little space for a freestanding wardrobe at the side.

6 Ways to Make Your Flat Feel Like It Has a Garden

Even if you don't have any outdoor space, you can bring garden style inside with these nifty ideas

There are many good things about living in a flat, not least the fact they tend to be more affordable. But one downside can be a lack of outdoor space. If you’re craving a garden or terrace now that the days are growing longer and milder, here are a few ways to cheat and introduce some life-affirming greenery into your abode. OK, you may not be able to recreate a full-stretch English lawn, complete with water feature and rose garden, but if you’re clever, you can add a lush, leafy atmosphere to any space, however small.

Line your windows
One of the things those without gardens often miss is simply enjoying a leafy view from the inside. However, curating a line of potted plants near a large window can provide a ‘green fix’.

Pick a variety of different-shaped foliage for a lush, garden-like feel, and don’t forget to include blooms. Put potted flowers high up on shelves and cut flowers on tables to weave in pretty shots of colour.

Double up
If you have access to any downstairs exterior space, however miserly, try this. Position potted plants either side of a window, both indoors and out, to add leafy depth. Even if your window only looks onto a light well, balcony or communal courtyard or alley, it will create the illusion of a secret garden oasis, as your eye is led beyond the glass.

Choose botanical wallpaper
If house plants aren’t for you, a simple wall of botanical wallpaper can still bring welcome greenery into an apartment. It may not beat an actual stroll in the forest, but it’s surprisingly uplifting.

…Or frame a window
Two large leafy plants either side of a window add a conservatory feel and will ‘green up’ the most urban of flats. Choose varieties with a tree-like shape, the taller the better, and put them in matching pots. Leave windows free of dressings to maximize natural light.

Boost your balcony
If your flat doesn’t have a garden, but you’re lucky enough to have a balcony, don’t miss the opportunity to fill it with greenery. Choose plants that will thrive in pots and pack as much in as possible. Give it all some structure with evergreen plants, such as bay trees, and add seasonal flowers for colour.

Love a living wall
Living walls or vertical gardens are growing in popularity, and can be used inside as well as out. They have real wow-factor, providing a ‘sweep’ of foliage that feels modern, arty and fresh.

Get professional advice on which plants to choose, and how best to care for them, so your wall continues to thrive.

4 Tips that will make your home a romantic destination this Valentine’s Day

Greeting cards with heart-touching wordings, heart shape balloons and cutouts, delicious chocolates, adorable gifts, beautiful red roses, candle-light dinner, all these are the flavors of Valentine’s Day. Though you don’t need any special occasion to express your love but still if you want to pamper your loved ones and make them feel special then there is no better day than Valentines. In this busy lifestyle, people get very less time to spend time with their loved ones and show how much they care for them. You can take advantage of such occasions and try to dedicate complete time for them. So what are you planning for this Valentine? Instead of visiting any crowded restaurant and wasting your quality time there, why don’t you plan for a romantic date at your home itself? Surprise your spouse with some striking and exquisite set up and create an ambiance that is perfectly suitable for a special day.

Wall decoration:
You can hang heart cutouts or heart shaped balloons all over the room. If you want to go unique then you can create a poster or a frame where you can write the three golden words ‘I Love You’ in different foreign languages and hang on the wall. This spectacular wall art is a meaningful way to express love. You can also create wall art with a photo collage or photo frames of you and your partner or can also write some memories on poster like wedding date or any event that changed your life; this would really develop a lovely bond.

Dinner table:
Eventually your valentine destination is dinner table, where you can spend some quality time with your loved ones and have some lovey-dovey conversations with exotic dinner. Apart from scrumptious dinner, your dinner table should help to set up the mood on fire. Decorate your dinner table with scented candles for a romantic candle light dinner. You can go for heart shape or rose shaped floating candles or stylish long candles. If you are placing flowers as centerpiece, remember it is not too tall as it can disturb when you make eye contact. Welcome your spouse with a greeting card and a rose on plate or if you want to just astonish your lady love than what is better option than placing a diamond ring on the plate (you can compromise with gold too) You can place candles all over the room to make the atmosphere warm and comfortable.

Flowers:
Flowers are most beautiful and adorable way to show love. Roses are not the only flowers on planet that symbolizes love, though it is most preferred. You can hang colorful flower wreath on you entrance door so that your partner gets a fresh and aromatic welcome. You can create a path of rose petals like a carpet and make your partner walk on it, till the dinner table. You can also place bunch of flowers on dining table as centerpiece or on the center table. If you are going with purple theme, orchids would match the best. If you are in confusion which flowers to choose then there is always the queen of flowers, rose.

Colors for the day:
Everybody knows what the ultimate color of valentines is. Yes it’s red. You can combine this bright color with white and create a contrast theme or you can go different with another passionate color, purple which also looks exceptional for a romantic decoration. Lightest shade of red that is pink will also do if you are planning to surprise your wife. Black should be rather avoided as for this occasion black seems very uninteresting and sad.
