Tricks to Turn Your Bedroom Into the Ultimate Slumber Cave

Ah, to get into bed after a long, hard day at work! The bedroom is where we relax and recharge our batteries, where we grab those few moments of peace and quiet. It is the place we’re supposed to rest our heads to get a good night’s sleep … in theory. Adequate sleep is vital to our health and happiness, yet we accept the lack of it as an inevitable consequence of having demanding jobs and personal stress. But improving the quality and length of our sleep doesn’t have to be a herculean task. All it takes is making a few simple changes to our nightly bedtime rituals.

1.Pay close attention to the light
Light is one of the most significant external factors to influence sleep. And if you’re not the type to wake up at the crack of dawn, ensure that your window coverings are adequate to block out the sunlight until you’re ready for the day. We’re thinking black-out blinds and thicker curtains. This is a matter of choice. Some need the room to be pitch-black, while others prefer a nigh-light for trips to the bathroom. Whatever you choose, it is important to remember that bright light can affect your wakefulness. Therefore, go for softer or yellow light to create a more relaxed, sleep inducing mood.

2.Opt for a calming palette
The bedroom is the place where you power down for the day. Now there aren’t any strict rules about bedroom colours schemes, but people tend to lean towards softer colours.
It depends on a lot of factors like shape, size and lighting, but the general rule here is to choose what makes you happy and doesn’t keep you awake at night. It’s also a good idea to check how you feel about the look of your bedroom in the day as well as the night.

3.Create a soundproof cocoon
Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it can’t get in the way of your sleep. Unwelcome sounds coming from outside are ultimate sleep destroyers. Anyone who lives in a city knows this all too well. Another solution, in addition to thicker curtains and airtight windows, is getting a good pair of earplugs or a white noise machine to drown out the sound.

4. Keep it cool
Another element that could be keeping you awake is the temperature of your room – either it’s too hot or too cold. Although there isn’t a definite temperature to ensure a good night’s sleep, as each of us are built differently, research says cooler is better. Play around with temperatures anywhere between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius. Fans, bedding and open windows are also your best friends when it comes to regulating the heat.

5. Don’t bring your work into the bedroom
It’s tough to punch out at the end of the day, especially now when you can do almost everything on your phone and laptop. In a perfect world, you should be able to leave all your electronics and worries at the bedroom door. But let’s face it, that is never going to happen. As a compromise, get into the habit of a wind-down routine before bed – dim the lights, read a book or play some soothing music. Anything that relaxes and makes you feel calm. If you have a study in your bedroom, a curtain hiding away your workstation is a good way of clearly demarcating bedtime from work time.

5 Ways to Make Your Kitchen Look and Feel Bigger

A kitchen of any size can feel roomy if you know a few tricks. Sticking to white cabinets and walls is a good start, but there are many other ways to make extra room in your kitchen, or create the illusion of a bigger space than you have, all without sacrificing a sense of personality. Here are 5 favourite ways to balance storage, style and long sightlines to get a functional layout with a spacious vibe.

1. Reduce your hardware
It’s a no-brainer that eliminating counter clutter is important for keeping a kitchen looking open and breezy, but you can take this a step further by removing the hardware.

Using cabinet doors with touch-activated latches or integrated reach-in pulls reinforce the clean lines of your new kitchen, which subtly help it appear bigger. It also gives you fewer little items to bump into and reduces the chances of your clothes getting caught in things, so the space will feel easier to move around in too.

2. Choose a compact dishwasher
Most standard dishwashers come in a 24-inch width, but compact or “condo-sized” dishwashers in an 18-inch width are growing in popularity.

Saving that 6 inches can give you a bigger cabinet elsewhere. Naturally, a smaller washer also fills up faster, which means you can run a full load more often instead of waiting a day between washes or running the machine while only half full. For smaller households this can be a perfect option.

Mirror your splashback
When you’re tucked into the kitchen working away on dinner, that’s when the space usually feels the smallest.

Using a mirror for the splashback opens up the sight lines, making the room seem much bigger, especially from close up. For a smart, moodier effect, use a tinted glass so the reflection is more subtle.

4. Add glass door cabinets
Here’s another way to lighten your uppers, but without actually changing your storage. Switch out typical solid cabinet fronts to doors with glass inserts to make the look much airier.

Use glass cabinet to display attractive drink ware, or use frosted glass so you only get a faint peek at the mishmash of items stored within.

Put your fridge on a diet
Speaking of saving inches, choosing a slimmer refrigerator can really open up your kitchen as well. Clients usually want the largest fridge they can fit, but these large 36-inches-and-up models often are full of clutter or simply remain half empty.

If you don’t cook often, or frequently shop for fresh produce, try slimming down your fridge to 30 inches or even 28 inches and leaving more room open for other essentials.

5 daily habit to keep our home clean

Want to be one of those ‘tidy people’? These everyday rituals will keep your house shipshape, day in and day out

For people like me who enjoy having a clean home, getting things in order doesn’t just involve doing a last-minute tidy-up whenever friends come round, instead it’s a way of life. We’re creatures of habit, and it’s only through doing daily cleaning tasks and routines that an organised home can be achieved. So if you consider yourself to be a messy person but would like to have a cleaner home, try adopting these everyday habits into your routine and they’re sure to do the trick.

 Get ride of the excess
Perhaps the reason there’s so much clutter around your house is because there’s simply too much stuff. When we don’t have a place for items, they end up floating around and often get in the way. To have a clean home, you have to get rid of any excess. This includes doubles of anything and items that you’re saving ‘just in case’.

2. Prioritise at all times
Tidy people tend to always have a long to-do list, but they’re careful to prioritise. In order to stay productive, create a daily list of the tasks that are most important for that particular day. Focus on completing each task, one by one, until it’s done, and for those that you didn’t have time for, simply place them at the top of tomorrow’s list.

3. Clean as you cook
The kitchen is notoriously easy to get messy, so it’s important to stay on top of it. The best way to do this is by multi-tasking as you cook. Don’t leave scraps lying around – toss them in the bin as you go. Wipe down surfaces along the way and place dishes in the dishwasher as soon you finish using them. When it’s time to serve up dinner, there’ll be hardly any cleaning up left to do.

4. Don’t procrastinate
You know that voice inside your head that says, “Just do it later”? The trick here is to avoid it when it comes to little tasks around your home. For example, when you see a messy surface, polish it right there on the spot. By ridding yourself of minor messes as they happen, you’re avoiding a much larger cleaning task later on. If you find some dirt on the mirror or the tiles you must a make a point to clean it within minutes. Here

Place your clothes away
Most of the time we’re in a rush when dealing with our clothes. We’re either swiftly getting dressed for the day, chucking the clothes we’ve decided not to wear on the floor, or quickly getting undressed when we get home and throwing our worn clothes on the bed. However, if you take time to place your clothes where they truly belong – either back in your wardrobe or in the laundry basket – you’ll save yourself extra work later on and help keep your house in order.
