How to Give Your Kitchen a Designer Look on a Budget

A bespoke kitchen is at the top of many a wish list, but it can often be out of reach due to the cost. These 6 smart ideas can be used to give the simplest of cook spaces a chic designer touch.

Add an element of surprise
Including a unique piece of furniture in your kitchen can make a big impact, and if it’s a vintage piece, it will have an even greater effect. A useful island surface and creates a stunning focal point in the room.

Partition your cabinets
One of the key features of a designer kitchen is bespoke storage tailored to your needs. Adding partitions to your cupboards is a simple way to create smaller compartments, seemingly designated for particular items. These can easily be fitted by a carpenter, or by yourself if you’re a dab hand at DIY.

Customise internal storage
There are all sorts of ways you can create bespoke storage in existing cupboards and drawers. Alternatively, use boxes and containers to compartmentalise your drawers.

Be smart about space
Utilising the space you have in a clever way will instantly create the sense of a well-thought-out design. Invest in some classy pieces to give a fancy first impression. These can be sourced from second-hand or discount stores, but remember to keep the plastic colanders hidden away!

Bring in some lighting
Designer kitchens have impeccable lighting. If you want to introduce new lighting to an existing kitchen, try using battery-operated LED spotlights and strips that don’t need wiring in. Install them over worktops, under cabinets and inside open or glass-fronted cupboards to create an expensive appearance.

Get the paint brushes out
Colour makes a huge difference to the look of a room and a lick of paint can work wonders. Whether it’s on the walls, floor or cabinets, use paint to instantly alter the mood of your kitchen. Either brighten it up with a splash of vibrancy or tone things down with an elegant neutral.

How to Create a Blissfully Clutter-Free Bedroom

Follow these steps to create a calm and beautiful space that restores the body, mind and spirit

Imagine walking into your bedroom and seeing clear, clean surfaces. The bed covers are smooth and inviting, the pillows are plumped, and on your nightstand is nothing but a vase of fresh flowers, a candle, a cup of herbal tea and your journal and pen. Any clothing has been easily put away because it fits within your dresser and wardrobe space with room to spare. If you have children, imagine finally coming into this beautiful space, closing the door behind you and enjoying a few moments of blissful peace and quiet.

Sound appealing? The first step on the road to a joyful, clutter-free home is giving clutter the boot.

Reframe clearing clutter in a positive light
It’s all too easy to let the bedroom become a dumping ground for all the random items that don’t seem to fit anywhere else. So the first step in clearing clutter is to consider what you do want in the bedroom. Fresh sheets, good lighting, your current book on the nightstand? Definitely. Piles of paper, children’s toys and the vacuum cleaner? Probably not.

Sort what you want to keep
Centre yourself by taking a few deep, calming breaths before you begin. Then start sorting through items in your bedroom, piece by piece, choosing those you want to keep there and removing everything else. Don’t worry right now about where the unwanted items will go – separating out this part of the process can make decision-making much easier.

Calm the visual noise
Ideally, the bedroom would be solely devoted to rest and relaxation, but if you live in a smaller space, this simply may not be possible. If you must make room for your desk in the bedroom, aim for a setup that allows you to hide everything away when you’ve finished working. Tuck work-related items into drawers and cabinets, leaving surfaces as clean and clear as possible for a restful feeling.

Store work away
Remove anything that reminds you of work, bills or to-dos from within visual range of your bed. If you can find a place to store these items in a different room, do so. If not, clear out a drawer or shelf in a closed cabinet to keep them out of view.

Create a peaceful atmosphere
What would a peaceful bedroom look and feel like to you? Consider whether there’s a certain colour (such as vivid turquoise) or object (such as a vase of fresh flowers) that really brings to mind the mood you want to create. Only bring in objects with the intention of cultivating peaceful, restorative feelings.

Savour and relax
Imagine doing a few gentle stretches or yoga poses before bed, lighting a scented candle and sipping some chamomile tea while you write in your journal. There are no to-do lists or pinging phones vying for your attention. You can simply be. Imagine how easy it would be to gradually unwind, release the tension of your day and ease into a restful, deep, restorative sleep in a space free of clutter and distractions. Once the busy day is done, make time to simply relax in your newly cleared space.

5 Ways to Bring Luxury Into Your Home

Envy those opulent homes in magazines no more; here are some key ways to turn your home into a luxury space.

Let’s admit it – even after the most glamorous of hotel experiences, many still feel that there is no better place than home. Wouldn’t it be great if one could have the dazzle of a five star hotel and the soothing comfort of a home, all in one place? Here are ways to infuse splendour and luxury into your home.

1.Consider an open layout
Creating a sense of ample space and expansiveness is essential to the making of a luxurious interior. Craft a layout with a grand entrance and an open plan living area where areas effortlessly flow into each other. Flood the interiors with lots of light and build an inside-outside relationship with big windows and sliding doors.

2.Bring in marble flooring
There is no other material that conveys a sense of luxury the way marble does. The high lustre of mirror-polished marble, along with its natural grain, gives a very luxe look to the interiors. You can consider using Indian Statuario, Italian types like Botticino or Carrarra, or Spanish Crema Marfil for the flooring. Let a single type of marble form the flooring palette of the home – avoid the conventional contrasting marble borders as they confine the room and make the space look smaller.

Decorate the marble floor with intricate inlay patterns in areas like the entrance or the common lobbies for maximum visual impact. The best part about marble is you can re-polish the stone every 5-7 years to refresh the look of your home.

3.Go for rich-textured furnishings
Upholster your furniture in luxurious fabrics like silk, brocade, jacquard and velvet. Mix and match the furnishings in deep colours like turquoise, magenta, ruby red, emerald green, gold or fabrics with a metallic sheen. Add plush rugs or silk carpets and dress the curtains with fringes, tassels, trimmings and other such embellishments

4. Pick statement furniture pieces
Select super comfortable and tasteful pieces of furniture that can infuse a luxurious look into your home. Hand-crafted wood or gilded furniture, ornamental sofa sets, fine leather sofas and armchairs, chaise longues and mother-of-pearl-inlaid furniture always give a splash of opulence to the room. Invest in antiques; they impart a sophisticated look to a space.

5.Use balanced lighting
A combination of ambient and accent lighting is an effective way to set a warm and luxurious tone to your home. Make provision for LED lights as well as indirect cove lighting in the faux ceiling, if you have one. Introduce stylish table lamps or floor lamps. Use picture lights or recessed lights to display your wall art and highlight design features or plants with indirect light. Install dimmers to set different moods within a room. But make sure keep a balance with natural light as well.
